Why is VAT applicable for virtual tickets?

From 1 January 2025, new EU VAT rules apply to virtual event tickets. Previously, the UK and EU had aligned VAT rules for live online events, but the EU has now introduced changes that impact VAT charges based on the ticket holder’s location.

WMS Congress Ltd is a UK-based company, and under UK VAT law:

  • UK VAT applies to virtual tickets for those in the UK because WMS Congress Ltd is a UK-registered company;
  • EU VAT is charged at the rate applicable in your country if you're in the EU, following the EU’s updated VAT rules.

Why is VAT applicable for in-person tickets?

In-person attendance takes place in Berlin, Germany. Under EU tax regulations, VAT is charged in the country where the event occurs. Therefore, in-person tickets include 19% German VAT, as German tax law requires.
